Smyth County Commissioner of Revenue Office

Tax Rates

The current tax rate is set every June by the Board of Supervisors.
Vehicles are assessed using the loan value per NADA.
The current tax rates are:  

Real Estate & Mobile Homes ($0.63/$100 value)
Personal Property ($2.25/$100 value)
Airplanes ($1.40/$100 value)
Machinery & Tools ($1.20/$100 value)
Merchants Capital ($0.40/$100 value)


There are three towns in Smyth County:  The Town of Marion, Town of Chilhowie, and the Town of Saltville.  Each of these towns have their own individual tax rates in addition to the county taxes.

Penalties

Smyth County does impose a penalty for not reporting personal property to the Commissioner of Revenue Office by May 1st of every year.
