Location
Smyth County is located in the
southwestern portion of Virginia.
The Town of Marion (6,349 persons) is the county seat,
and the county includes the Towns of Chilhowie and
Saltville.
Interstate 81, “the backbone of western Virginia”
traverses Smyth County from east to west. The City of
Bristol is approximately 45 miles southwest, Roanoke is
100 miles northeast, Richmond is 275 miles northeast,
and Washington, D.C. is 340 miles northeast of the
county.

Interstate 81 traverses Smyth County including
seven interchanges
and Interstate 77 is located only 27 miles from the Town of
Marion.

Railroad
The
Norfolk-Southern Mainline
railroad
also runs parallel to the Interstate 81 through Smyth County.

team track service are available from Norfolk Southern
Air
Commercial air service is available at
Tri-Cities Airport near Bristol approximately 45 miles from
Marion. Mountain Empire, a general aviation airport, is
located in Smyth County with a mile-long runway.
