Location

Smyth County is located in the southwestern portion of Virginia.  The Town of Marion (6,349 persons) is the county seat, and the county includes the Towns of Chilhowie and Saltville.  Interstate 81, “the backbone of western Virginia” traverses Smyth County from east to west. The City of Bristol is approximately 45 miles southwest, Roanoke is 100 miles northeast, Richmond is 275 miles northeast, and Washington, D.C. is 340 miles northeast of the county.

  • Highways

    Interstate 81 traverses Smyth County including seven interchanges and Interstate 77 is located only 27 miles from the Town of Marion.

    Over 20 trucking firms serve the Smyth County area offering national, regional, and interstate carrier service.

    Railroad
    The Norfolk-Southern Mainline railroad also runs parallel to the Interstate 81 through Smyth County. Bulk and mixed freight service, containerized piggyback, and team track service are available from Norfolk Southern

    Air    
    Commercial air service is available at Tri-Cities Airport near Bristol approximately 45 miles from Marion.  Mountain Empire, a general aviation airport, is located in Smyth County with a mile-long runway.

         Electricity
    Appalachian Power provides dependable and low-cost power supply to the county.

              Fuel Mix:  96.8% fossil, 3.2% hydro, 0% nuclear

         Natural Gas
    ATMOS Energy distributes natural gas to a diverse client base, serving customers with many needs in seven states.          

             Heat Content:    1,034 BTU's per cubic foot

         Telecommunications
    Local telephone service is provided by EMBARQ who offers digital switching, fiber optics networks, and high-speed Internet access throughout the county.

         Water and wastewater
    Smyth County provides service to the surrounding areas with 89 miles of water mains and 22 miles of sewer lines. Local towns also provide service within their immediate areas.
