Tax Relief

RELIEF ACT OF 1998

Your tax bill has been reduced by 65% on the first $20,000 of value for your
qualifying vehicle. The commonwealth of Virginia will reimburse your locality for this amount once you have paid the balance due shown on your tax bill. If the value of your qualifying vehicle is $1,000 or less, your tax has been eliminated and the commonwealth of Virginia’s share is 100%. Tax relief was calculated using your locality's tax rates as of august 1, 1997.

WHAT VEHICLES QUALIFY FOR TAX RELIEF?

The personal property tax relief act of 1998 provides tax relief for passenger cars,
motorcycles, and pickup or panel trucks having a registered gross weight of less than 7,501 pounds.  To qualify, a vehicle must be owned or leased by an individual, and used less than 50% for business purposes.  In addition, motor homes, trailers, and farm use vehicles do not qualify for tax relief.
