Claiming a Notary Public Commission

When a Notary commission is issue, the Secretary of the Commonwealth sends the commission to the Circuit Court Clerk's Office and a notice to the applicant.  When you receive your notice, please wait a couple of days and then come to the Clerk's Office in person to receive your commission.  No appointment is necessary, but it may be wise to call the office first to confirm that your commission has been received.  When you pick up your commission, you will need to show photo identification, bring your commission letter from the Secretary of the Commonwealth, and pay a fee of $10.  Payment may be made by cash, check or money order (payable to Circuit Court Clerk), or by credit or debit card (in which case a small convenience fee is charged).

Commissions expire if they are not claimed within sixty (60) days of the commission date.  Applicants who do not claim their commission within sixty (60) days must re-apply.
