Animal Control
Shelter & Adoption Information
The Smyth County Animal Shelter, managed by Smyth Animal Rescue, provides a comfortable, warm and safe environment for all animals in our care. Our staff works with Smyth County Animal Control Officers to serve our community and the animals that live in our area. We serve stray and lost animals, sick or injured animals that require emergency veterinarian treatment. We provide assistance when owners need to rehome their pets; provide education and resources to keep animals with their owners and allocate space for animals awaiting court cases.
Pet Adoption Procedures:
- Residents of Smyth County and adjacent counties may adopt pets from Smyth County Animal Shelter with proper identification required.
- Adoptions are no longer chosen on a first come, first serve basis. Adopters will be chosen from a pool of applicants based on which home is the best fit for each pet. Consideration will be given to the pets energy levels, physical and medical needs, as well as the temperament of the pet.
- Most animals will be altered (spayed/neutered) prior to adoption and will receive age-appropriate vaccinations. Rabies vaccinations are required by Virginia law for each pet to be given by a licensed Veterinarian by the age of 4 months or older. This is the responsibility of the adopter to fulfill Rabies Vaccinations for their animals. This includes Cats and Dogs.
- Animals that are available and have met State mandated hold periods and lost/stray animals can be viewed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/smythshelterfriends or by visiting https://bit.ly/SCAS_available. If you see an animal you're interested in adopting, you can apply to adopt at bit.ly/SCAS_adopt
Vaccination and Licensing of Smyth County Pets:
- The owner or custodian of all dogs and domestic cats, four months of age and older, shall have them currently vaccinated for rabies by a licensed veterinarian.
- It shall be unlawful for any person to own a dog or cat four months of age and older without proper licensing. Smyth County Pet Licensing runs by the calendar year, from January 1 until December 31. The pet license may be obtained from the Smyth County Treasurer's Office when you show receipt of current rabies vaccination for your pet.
