Shelter & Adoption Information
Our responsibilities include the enforcement of local and state animal control laws, the humane capture and treatment of unwanted animals, investigation of animal abuse, neglect, cruelty, and the provision of emergency transportation and care for injured animals within our jurisdiction.
The Smyth County Animal Shelter provides a comfortable, warm and safe environment for animals received unwanted, abused or abandoned.  We provide adoption services for animals with suitable dispositions in an effort to place them within a nurturing environment.  We believe that shelter animals can become the loving, caring companions that are needed and wanted by our society today. 
 
Pet Adoption Procedures:
  1. Residents of Smyth County and adjacent counties may adopt pets from Smyth County Animal Shelter with proper identification required.
  2. Every new owner of a pet adopted from Smyth County Animal Control Shelter shall have the pet sterilized within thirty days of the pet turning six months of age, or within thirty days if the pet is over six months of age.
  3. Each pet is required to be vaccinated for rabies within seven days, if it is four months of age or older.  Rabies vaccination is required for each pet, upon turning four months of age.
  4. Return of the proper paperwork (sterilization and rabies certificates) is required within seven days of sterilization.
Vaccination and Licensing of Smyth County Pets:
  1. The owner or custodian of all dogs and domestic cats, four months of age and older, shall have them currently vaccinated for rabies by a licensed veterinarian.
  2. It shall be unlawful for any person to own a dog or cat four months of age and older without proper licensing.  Smyth County Pet Licensing runs by the calendar year, from January 1 until December 31.  The pet license may be obtained from the Smyth County Treasurer's Office when you show receipt of current rabies vaccination for your pet.

Will the shelter spay or neuter my adopted animal(s)?
The shelter does not have a veterinarian on staff to spay or neuter animals.   However, assistance may be available through the Smyth County Humane Society for spaying or neutering.

I am having problems with wild animals, can Animal Control help me?
Animal Controls provides services in regards to domestic animals only.  Wildlife complaints need to be directed to the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries(276) 783-4860.
What are the leash and restraint laws in Smyth County?
It is unlawful for dogs to run at large in Smyth County.
Can I handle the dogs and cats at the Shelter?
We do not allow handling of the animals prior to adoption due to liability concerns.  We must protect the public and the animals.
Will animal control pick up cats?
We do not pick up cats, however we do accept cats at the shelter from Smyth County residents only.
