Sheriff B. C. “Chip” Shuler was elected in the November 2015 election. He assumed office on January 1, 2016 after the retirement of Sheriff R. David Bradley. Sheriff Shuler is a life-long resident of the Sugar Grove community in Smyth County. He is a graduate of Marion Senior High School and Wytheville Community College. Sheriff Shuler began his law enforcement career in 1983 with the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office and has worked in Communications, Jail, Patrol and Investigations. He was the first DARE Officer for the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office which he feels was one of his most rewarding assignments. Sheriff Shuler was assigned to Investigations in 1992 and promoted to the rank of Sergeant; he has held the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Major. Sheriff Shuler has attended numerous specialized schools for law enforcement that include the 41st Session of the Virginia Forensic Science Academy, Homicide Top Gun School, and the 234th Session of the FBI National Academy. He is a Department of Criminal Justice Services Instructor and instructs on a regular basis at the Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. In 2005 Sheriff Shuler was selected as “Member of the Year” by the Virginia Forensic Science Academy Alumni Association for his work in a child predator case. Sheriff Shuler is a member of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, Virginia Forensic Science Alumni Association, Virginia Chapter of International Association of Arson Investigators Inc., and the FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. He is a member and attends the Brookside Baptist Church.
